Liberty Head $2 1/2 Gold Quarter Eagle(1840-1907) - In 1840 the Classic Head design was retired, and the longest running Design for Gold Pieces in the US was Launched. The Liberty Head Design was used for the Eagle, Half Eagle and Quarter Eagle. The same pattern was used for large and half cents. Featuring a Head of Liberty facing Left wearing a Coronet shaped crown saying Liberty with Hair tied up with beads in a bun often called braided hair. The reverse design used the same pattern as the Half Dollar and Quarter featuring an eagle turned 3/4 forward and to the right with a Heraldic Shield on its chest and arrows and an Olive branch grasped in its claws. The Series remains popular with collectors and investors alike as there are both rare and common dates to accommodate the two markets as one.
