Product Details

This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1878 Shield Nickel graded PR66+ by PCGS. Specimens are often described as 'dull,' but this Superb Gem proof is flashy with brilliant surfaces that display a faint purple-blue tinge. Expectedly razor-sharp and essentially free of marks. Only 2,350 Shield nickel proofs were struck in 1877. They represent the only production of that denomination for the year. Struck in the middle of a depression (or panic, as it was known in the 19th century), there was no demand for small denomination coinage in 1877. As a result, only proofs were struck for collectors. This proof-only status immediately made the 1877 and 1878 nickels series keys.
This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.

Shield Nickels (1866-1883) - No Rays (1867-1883) – The No Rays Shield Nickel was designed by James Longacre and produced from 1867 until 1883 when the issue gave way to Charles Barber’s Liberty design. The “No Rays” nickel variety features the Shield motif obverse used by Longacre’s two cent piece, and the reverse bears a large “5” encircled by stars along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CENTS. The coins were struck on planchets made of .750 copper and .250 nickel which is the same composition as the nickels in circulation today. The more common of the two Shield Nickel types, the No Rays Nickel maintains demand among type collectors who seek clean spot free examples.
