Product Details

This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1878 8TF $1 Spiked Eye, VAM-14.8, PR65 PCGS. The initial design for the Morgan dollar featured an eagle with eight distinctly visible tailfeathers. A subsequent revision brought the number of tailfeathers down to seven, creating a one-year subtype restricted to Philadelphia coins. This Gem specimen is one of the 500 proofs believed to have been struck with an Eight Tailfeathers reverse. A splendid array of magenta, sunset-gold, red, and cobalt-blue iridescence blanket each side of this Gem proof, while fully defined design elements only add to the exceptional visual appeal.  Variety specialists will appreciate the huge eye spike, which is really a doubled eyelid, diagnostic of VAM-14.8. The dies were also used for circulation strikes, with all formats of this VAM variety considered rare.
This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.

  • Known as a Morgan Dollar
Morgan Dollars (1878-1921) - After 1873, there was a short hiatus from U.S. dollar production. But in 1878, the Mint began to again strike silver dollars under the orders of the Bland-Allison Act. Created by Charles Morgan, the new dollar design was produced until 1904 and then again for one year in 1921. The Morgan dollar features a portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse with a crown adorned with wheat, and cotton. The reverse offers an eagle with wings spread clutching a crop of arrows and an olive branch clutched in its talons. The coins were struck in 90% silver and are 0.7734 of a troy ounce. They are popular today with silver buff and collectors alike. In fact, they are perhaps the most collected series in all of U.S. numismatics.
