Product Details
This is a PCGS graded coin. You will receive the coin pictured. You are purchasing an 1864 Indian Head Bronze Small Cent graded PR66RB (Bronze) by PCGS. An exquisite Red and Brown specimen, the coin in this lot displays a rich olive-brown and orange-red sheen that is more lustrous on the obverse. The reverse also reveals lilac tinged iridescence at direct angles. Appreciably reflective and smooth, both sides are crisply detailed throughout. Beginning in July of 1864, the Philadelphia Mint substituted the new bronze Indian Cent for its copper-nickel counterpart in proof sets. Approximately 100 proof sets were delivered that month, and when combined with some coins that were sold individually, the original mintage of the proof 1864 bronze Cent is most likely 150 pieces. Far fewer are believed extant, a great coin.

Indian Head Cents Type 3 Bronze (1864-1909) During the Civil War, attrition caused the hoarding of coins struck in gold, silver and copper nickel. This prompted the U.S. Mint to change the composition of the one cent coinage. The remaining years (1864 -1909) the Indian Cent was struck on bronze planchets. This variety was made from planchets of .950 copper and .050 tin and zinc. The diameter of 19mm is the same as previous small cents. The design was from John Longacre’s Indian motif using the head of Liberty dressed in an Indian Feather headdress. Add this coin to your cart today!
