Indian Head $2.50 Gold Half Eagle (1908-1929)
This design was issued in both the $2.50 and $5 size and featured the first US coin without any Raised edges and the main devices and legends and in sunken relief below the surface of the coin. The coin Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt featured a Standing Eagle inspired by the $10 Gold Eagle of 1907 designed by his teacher Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Recessed design was a poor choice at the time as the country had become obsessed with hygiene improvement to combat illness and the design was believed to be a collecting point for germs and bacteria. The coins were not kept in high numbers for collections and most frequently saved for jewelry and saw high numbers destroyed in the gold recalls of the 1930s. Today this results in two series of coins that are great collectables and a fantastic entry point for collecting gold as a hobby or investment.
