Liberty V Nickels No Cents (1883) 1883 was a transitional year for nickel designs. Charles Barber’s new nickel design was introduced to infamous proportions. The original design features a Liberty bust obverse and a reverse design that has a large Roman numeral V for five. The problem with this first year type is there was no indication of value. Immediately upon release nefarious entities plated the examples with gold and passed the coins off as the similar sized five dollar gold coins. Merchants unfamiliar with the new design fell prey and these “racketeer nickels” prompted the immediate change of the reverse design. The word “CENTS” was added quickly to the remaining issue. The story is a fascinating example of numismatic lore and keeps this one year variety popular among type collectors, and nickel enthusiasts alike.
This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.
