Braided Hair Half Cent (1840 – 1857) Struck as proof only issues until 1849, the early dated Braided Half Cents are rare. The circulating strike began in 1849 and continued until 1857 using a 23mm plain edged copper planchet weighing 5.44 grams. The coins were designed by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht whose work included the Seated type of the era. The works of Gobrecht all have a distinct following and remain desirable to all levels of collector.
