Product Details

This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are buying a 1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, BD-2, Taraszka-25, Rarity-2 graded MS-63 by PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. An outstanding coin. The devices on each side are fully struck with notable detail on the stars, curls, shield, and neck feathers. Copious mint luster swirls over lemon yellow-gold surfaces that show the slightest greenish accents. Ticks and a few wispy marks are no match for the larger significance and overall appeal of this Select 1801 ten dollar gold piece. Unlike many gold coins of the era, the current offering is pleasantly free of adjustment marks. John Dannreuther estimates in his book Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties that as many as 600 to 800 pieces are known from a total estimated mintage of 44,344 coins.  Naturally, high-grade examples like the one offered here are conditionally rare.

Coin Features:
  • PCGS graded MS 63, BD-2
  • PCGS Secure Gold Shield
  • Heraldic Eagle reverse (1797-1804)
  • Obverse: Bust of Liberty Facing Right Wearing a Turban Shaped Cap 13 stars and Liberty around Rim
  • Reverse: Heraldic Eagle Seal/Crest Bearing Arrows and an Olive Branch
The early Philadelphia Mint was concerned about the numbers of coins struck and the serviceability of the dies required for their production, and not at all about the date those dies bore (or in some extreme cases, even the design). While the first few Eagles minted, from the 1795 Small Eagle through the 1798 Large Eagle, are each known from at least one to at most five die marriages per year. The 1801 EagleS, were all struck with the Large Eagle or Heraldic Eagle reverse and were produced with 2 different die pairings known to collectors today. The majority of the coins dated 1801 are of the BD-2 variety, as the BD-1 variety is quite scarce.
