Product Details

This is an PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1870 Liberty Seated Liberty Silver Dollar graded PR66 CAM by PCGS, OC-P3, R.5 Osburn-Cushing Die State a/b. The centers of this lovely proof are brilliant and surrounded by golden-brown, then deep blue at the margins. Slight striking softness is noted on the eagle's neck and wing. This Seated dollar represents the scarcest of three 1870 proof die marriages, and the only one that employs the transitional reverse die from 1866. Distinctive die lines within IN GOD WE TRUST identifies the variety and confirms this is an original proof strike. The 1870 is the first proof Seated Dollar since 1861 with an original mintage of 1,000 coins. While the published mintage is 1,000 pieces, Duncan Lee indicates, in his August 11, 2006 CDN Newsletter article 'many were melted at year's end, making the 1870 scarcer than its mintage would indicate.' As with most proof dollars from this period, the certified population centers around the grades of PR63 and PR64. Most specimens, were cleaned or improperly stored, and consequently Gems are rare. Premium Gems are, even rarer. NGC and PCGS combined have graded just 7 examples in PR66 CAM and 4 Deep/Ultra Cameos.
This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.

Seated Dollar with Motto (1866-1873) During the Civil War, religious passions spurred the addition of “IN GOD WE TRUST” to our nation’s coinage. It was added to Christian Gobrecht’s seated coinage in 1866. The motto eventually replaced E PLURIBUS UNUM as our nation’s official motto. The Motto dollar was produced mainly by the Philadelphia facilities, but limited numbers were struck in the new western Carson City and San Francisco Mints. Examples from these Mints remain elusive, with the 1870-S being the key to the series.
