Roosevelt Silver Dime (1948 - 1964) The Roosevelt dime was designed to commemorate the life and accomplishments of Franklin Roosevelt who served as president for the longest tenure in American history and led America during the majority of WWII. One of the most important restrictions on US coins is the requirement to not produce a likeness of a living president. This was originally used to discourage the link of rulers to sovereign kings and emperors with an inherited right to rule. The US mint would again remember a president who had died in office with the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964 after his assassination in Dallas Texas.
