Product Details
This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1870 Indian Cent graded PR66 Red Brown by PCGS. Shallow N. The visual appeal of this Premium Gem example is simply outstanding. Steel-blue, lilac, and magenta tints enhance chestnut-brown and copper-gold surfaces. Marks are practically invisible to the unaided eye. Two die pairs were employed to strike an estimated 1,000 proof cents in 1870, but according to Snow only the first pair (PR1, as seen here) is collectible. Interestingly, the obverse die was also used to produce the 1864 With L proof restrikes.
This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.
Coin Features:
Indian Head (1959-1909) -Variety 3 - Bronze (1864-1909)-During the Civil War, attrition caused the hoarding of coins struck in gold, silver and copper nickel. This prompted the U.S. Mint to change the composition of the one cent coinage. The remaining years (1864 -1909) the Indian Cent was struck on bronze planchets. This variety was made from planchets of .950 copper and .050 tin and zinc. The diameter of 19mm was the same as previous small cents. The design was from John Longacre’s Indian motif using the head of Liberty dressed in an Indian Feather headdress.
