Product Details

This is a PCGS Graded Coin. You will receive the pictured coin. You are Buying a 1793 Flowing Hair, Wreath Vine & Bars Edge Large Cent graded VF-30, S-9, B-12, R.2. A truly rare type coin designed by Henry Voigt. Numismatic wisdom states that 63,353 Wreath cents were assumed to be struck, mostly in April 1793, and some as late as early July. It is unlikely that any Wreath cents were coined in early March at the time the Chain cents were minted. More likely is the possibility that a small number of Wreath cents were struck in September and delivered with the Liberty Cap cents on September 18. The Wreath Cent is clearly the most recognized and the most popular of the 1793 coinage issues. Among the three large cent designs, it is also the most plentiful. For the collector who wants a single example of our first copper coinage, this is an excellent candidate. Both sides have splendid olive-brown color with a few small splashes of steel and maroon patina. Both sides have numerous tiny planchet defects or fissures. Regardless, examples of this caliber are truly rare and prized in the numismatic community. This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.

Flowing Hair Wreath Reverse (1793) - Flowing Hair Wreath Reverse Large Cents were the nation’s third cent issue replacing the short lived Flowing Hair Chain Cent. Designed by Henry Voight Robert Scot the coins were struck on copper planchets weighing 13.89 grams that were 26 to 28 mm in diameter (the diameter varies because the coins were struck without a collar). The coins feature a portrait ‘emblematic of Liberty’ as ordered by the coinage act of 1792. The image was less refined than later likenesses which has the hair of Liberty tied back with a ribbon and the bust draped in cloth.
