This is a NGC graded coin, you will receive the pictured coin. You are buying a 1913 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle JD-1, R.4, Matte Proof graded PR68 by NGC. Even tan surfaces match the color that is typical of this year, which is slightly lighter than the previous two issues. Only slight weakness exists in the center of the right half of the bottom two feathers. The current example is tied for finest known of the date, with PCGS having never assigned the lofty PR68 grade, and NGC having done so only four times (4/26). This series in proof condition is quite short, spanning just eight years from 1908 through 1915. Production for all years was accomplished with a single die marriage, and according to John Dannreuther's book on proof gold coinage, the 1909 is the rarest with only 50 to 60 coins known, followed by 1914 and 1915, with 70 to 80 coins known apiece. The remaining years have an estimated 90 to 120 coins known each. A truly magnificent Matte Proof $2 1/2!!
