Product Details
This is a PCGS graded coin and you will receive the pictured coin. You are buying a 1852 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar Gold Piece, 900 Thousands fine, graded XF45 by PCGS, K-12a, Ex: S.S. Central America, SSCA 7063 . This Augustus Humbert / United States Assay Office ten dollar was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, which sank off the coast of North Carolina in September of 1857. This example displays lemon-gold toning and some natural luster around the lettering. Fortunately, there are no distracting marks and the high points show some wear. Listed on page 394 of the 2026 Guide Book. The Assay Office of Gold in San Francisco issued these coins for only two years, 1852-53 before the US San Francisco Mint was opened in 1854. The Assay office played a crucial role in the early California Gold Rush economy. This is an excellent coin to add to your collection.
