On September 12th, 1857, a Category 2 hurricane sank the S.S. Central America on her journey from Nicaragua to New York. She went down with 425 souls and 15 tons of California Gold Rush gold. The amount of gold that went down with the ship was significant enough to contribute to the Panic of 1857, since the banks in New York were relying on that shipment. After the ship’s discovery in 1988, much of the gold was recovered, in remarkably good condition. Amongst the rarest items was this 88.15 troy ounce bar, assayed by Henry Hentsch, a Swiss immigrant to San Francisco. Only 38 of the bars recovered were assayed by him, making this bar an incredible link to the fascinating history of the California Gold Rush.
